카펜터스는 싱어인 karen capenter와 동생인 richard capenter 의 남매로 이루어진 그룹입니다.

카펜터스의 시작은 원래 1960대 후반 3인조 밴드로 출발하면서 시작됩니다.

하지만 68년 베이시스트인 jacobs가 탈퇴하고, 곧바로 richard의 친구가 들어오지만 그역시 얼마지나지 않아 탈퇴하게 되며 이때부터 본격적인 남매 듀오로서 활동을 하게됩니다.

1969년 The capenters 라는 이름으로 첫 앨범인 Ticket to ride 를 발표하며 주목을 받기 시작합니다.

그후 70년에 발표된 Close to you라는 앨범으로 성공을 거두죠. 특히 동명타이틀곡인 close to you 는 이들에게 첫 No.1 곡이 되며, 이 앨범을 통해 Grammy에서 2개부문을 수상하게 됩니다. 1970년부터 75년 까지 이들은 수많은 히트곡들을 쏟아내며 전성기를 구가합니다.

하지만 75년 발표한 앨범 Horizon 이후 이들은 쇠퇴하기 시작합니다.richard는 마약에 빠져 78년부터 치료에들어갔고, karen역시 지나친 다이어트로 거식증에 걸리게 됩니다. karen은 79년 솔로앨범인 phil ramone 를 발표하지만 실패로 돌아가고 맙니다.

81년에 이들은 다시 앨범 touch me when we're dancing 들 발표 차트16위까지 올라가며 활동을 재개 하지만 Made in america 라는 앨범을 끝으로 83년 karen은 끝내 거식증으로 인한 심장이상으로 세상을 떠나게 됩니다.

 

이들의 히트곡으로는 yesterday once more, only yesterday,superstar, close to you, sing a song,top of the world, the masquerade, rainy days and mondays,please Mr,postman,jambalaya,hurtining each other... 등등 많은 명곡들이 있죠.
